“You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.” ~ Luke 1:31 NIV
In today’s verse, the angel didn’t tell Mary that the child will be called Jesus but rather that she is to ‘call’ Him Jesus. It is a small difference in structure yet it speaks volumes.
The verse hands over a critical responsibility to Mary. God was sending his son to earth to live as a man and die to bring us salvation and reconciliation with God. It was and remains the most significant event in human existence. As grand as this is, God almighty still had a need for a ‘Mary’ whose role would be to first believe, then carry and birth the Child, and then call his name ‘Jesus’ when he is born.
God has mighty plans and can do grander things than we can ever imagine. However, we have a small albeit significant role to play if we wish to see God’s design come to light in our lives. We are all like Mary. God has incredible things in store for our lives. We must listen attentively and ensure we cross every ‘t’ and dot every ‘i’ when it comes to doing our own little part.
